Silk block print shirt.

  • Bagh printing, that derive its name from village Bagh of Madhya Pradesh, is an elaborate process taking 20 to 30 days during which cloth made of natural fibres (cotton or silk) are washed in river water, and dried on the river banks, dyed in a traditional manner, washed again and made ready for printing. The cloth is then printed with hand carved relief wooden blocks of intricate designs, inspired by geometric and floral shapes; some of the printing blocks are centuries old and preserved as family heirlooms. The printing blocks are dipped in trays of natural dyes and hand pressed on the prepared fabric. Red and black dyes are most common, but indigo, mustard, and khaki dyes are also used. Printing dyes are derived from plants, fruits, flowers, and minerals. Once printed the cloth is left to dry in the sun for a perfect finish.
